4 Easy Steps to Organize Your Shed or Garage

It’s almost inevitable—even with all the extra storage in the world, belongings seem to pile up over time. Sure, you can add a storage building or garage to your property (we can help with that), but then what?

No matter how much storage space you have, a little organization can go a long way toward cutting clutter and maximizing that space. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Sort

Facing a mountain of boxes, tools, and miscellaneous items can be intimidating. But every project has to start somewhere! Begin by sorting everything into piles: keep, donate, and toss.

Pro Tip: Take everything out of the building first so you can clearly see how much space you have to work with.

Step 2: Categorize

Take your organization a step further by categorizing your "keep" pile. Think of it like organizing files on your computer—put memorabilia, holiday décor, sports gear, and tools into their own groups.

Be sure to label boxes clearly. You’ll save yourself so much time when you're looking for specific items later on!

Step 3: Clean

After sorting and categorizing, it’s time to deep-clean your shed or garage. Sweep out the dust, wipe down surfaces, and make the space feel fresh.

A clean space is the perfect foundation for staying organized long term.

Step 4: Store

Finally, think about the best ways to store your items. Shelving units are great for keeping boxes organized, while pegboards are perfect for tools and smaller items.

There are tons of DIY ideas and ready-to-install options available at The Home Depot to help you customize your storage setup. For even more inspiration, check out Pinterest for creative storage hacks and tutorials!
